How do I use Shopify tap to Pay on my iPhone?
On the iPhone, tap to pay comes with every Shopify package and transactions are subject to the Shopify Payments' in-person credit card fees.

Without any additional hardware, you may accept contactless credit cards, debit cards, and all types of digital wallets with the iPhone's Tap to Pay feature. Use a different linked card reader if you want to allow swipe or PIN payments. Every Shopify package includes Tap to Pay on iPhone, and transactions are subject to the Shopify Payments' in-person credit card charges.
The Stripe Terminal End User Terms apply to the iPhone's Tap to Pay function.
Requirements
You must fulfill the following conditions in order to use Tap to Pay on an iPhone:
- Your store is based in the United States, and USD is specified as its currency.
- You utilize the Shopify POS app on your iPhone and have Shopify Payments activated as your store's payment processor. You also have the Point of Sale channel configured in your admin.
- iOS 16 or later is installed on your iPhone XS or newer.
Fees
costs Additional costs may apply when using Tap to Pay on an iPhone. Up to 100 Tap to Pay on iPhone transactions can be processed by stores each month without incurring any additional costs. After that, there is a charge of $0.25 USD each transaction for the rest of the month. All transactions are subject to Shopify Payments' regular credit and debit rates.
Your Shopify bill includes a separate line item for Tap to Pay fees for iPhone.
Activate Tap to Pay on iPhone for Shopify POS
To enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for your business, you must be the owner of the establishment.
You must accept Apple's terms of service using your Apple ID before you can set up Tap to Pay on your iPhone for the first time. The Apple ID must be yours or your company's. Later, the Apple ID can be modified.
Once you have finished the initial activation, any iPhone logged into Shopify POS under the store's account will be able to pair with Tap to Pay on iPhone at any of your locations.
Steps:
- Tap > Settings > Set up hardware in Shopify POS.
- Tap Next after selecting Tap to Pay on iPhone.
- Tap to validate the Apple ID. Use a Different Apple ID to choose a different Apple ID, or Continue with This Apple ID to continue using the current Apple ID. Accept the terms of service after entering your Apple ID.
- Click Done. Your store has enabled Tap to Pay on iPhone, and your iPhone is now ready to receive payments.
Pair Tap to Pay on iPhone on additional devices
Additional iPhones logged into your Shopify POS account that have Tap to Pay on iPhone enabled can pair with it to accept payments without requiring an Apple ID or agreeing to the terms of service.
Steps:
- Tap > Settings > Set up hardware from Shopify POS. Next, tab after choosing Tap to Pay on iPhone. Click Done.
Accept payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone
With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, you can accept a wide variety of contactless payment methods. You need to pair a second card reader if you want to make swipe or PIN payments. Make sure the card reader you select for the customer's payment option at the register is the appropriate one. To make contactless payments, use Tap to Pay on your iPhone, and to make contact-based purchases, use your card reader.
Steps:
- Tap Checkout on the Cart page.
- On an iPhone, select Tap to Pay from the Select payment option page.
- Your customer should hold their tap-enabled credit/debit card or their mobile wallet on their smartphone or smartwatch where the Tap to Pay on iPhone interface will appear.
- Until the animation indicated the payment has been completed and you hear the Tap to Pay on iPhone success sound, ask the customer to hold their contactless payment method over the tap area.
- To return to the Shopify POS products screen, hit Done after deciding whether to give the consumer a receipt.
Unpair Tap to Pay on iPhone from your POS devices
You can unpair Tap to Pay on iPhone to make it no longer appear as a card reader option at the register. When Tap to Pay is unpaired from an iPhone, the store still has access to it.
Steps:
- Tap > Settings > Manage linked hardware from Shopify POS.
- On the iPhone, tap Tap to Pay.
- Toggle the card reader off.
Deactivate Tap to Pay on iPhone for your store
If you run a business, you can disable Tap to Pay on iPhone across all of your devices for your locations and business. On an iPhone, Tap to Pay can always be reactivated. Your Apple ID that is linked to your business is not disconnected or altered when you disable Tap to Pay on an iPhone.
- Tap > Settings > Manage linked gear from Shopify POS.
- On the iPhone, tap Tap to Pay.
- Select Deactivate every device.
- Select Deactivate every device.
All previously associated devices cannot take payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone once you deactivate it for your store.
Disconnect Tap to Pay on iPhone or change your Apple ID
Refer to the Tap to Pay on iPhone frequently asked questions if you want to disconnect Tap to Pay on iPhone or modify the Apple ID linked to your store.
It may take up to 15 minutes for changes to the Apple Business Register to take effect. If you previously associated Tap to Pay on iPhone, you can still process transactions even if you disconnect your business. The only person who can pair and connect to Tap to Pay on an iPhone once a store is disconnected is the business owner.
Troubleshoot Tap to Pay on iPhone
Investigate the issue using the procedures below if Tap to Pay on iPhone isn't working:
- Check to see if you are eligible to utilize Tap to Pay on an iPhone.
- If you work there, be sure that Tap to Pay on iPhone has been enabled by the store owner.
- Check to see if you are connected to the internet. To process payments, Shopify POS requires a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection to the internet. Use a different payment method while offline if you are unable to access the internet.
- Verify the firewall settings.
- Ensure that Shopify POS has the right rights to access your smartphone's Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is enabled on your device.
- Ensure that the Shopify POS app has the right rights to access your device's location and that location services are enabled on your device.
- Shopify Payments test mode needs to be off in order for an iPhone to connect to Tap to Pay.
- Make sure that Tap to Pay on the iPhone is listed as a connected device in the Shopify POS hardware settings. Pair your device with Tap to Pay on the iPhone if it isn't already connected.
It's possible that you won't be able to use Tap to Pay on an iPhone if it has undergone unlawful changes. You must wait until the feature is accessible if an alert states that Tap to Pay on iPhone won't be available until a specific time. You'll need to reset your iPhone to factory settings if the problem still occurs after that day and time.
